Parish History [edit | edit source]. PARKHAM (St. James), a parish, in the union of Bideford, hundred of Shebbear, Great Torrington and N. divisions of Devon, 6 miles (S. W.) from parish is bounded on the north by the sea. Resources [edit | edit source] Civil Registration [edit | edit source]. Birth, marriages and deaths were kept by the government, from July to the present day. The burial of hearts in churches seems to have been a not unusual custom at one time. The heart of Robert Bruce [King of Scotland ] is said to be buried near the high altar at Melrose Abbey [ca. 25 miles south of Edinburgh]. PARRACOMBE is a village and parish among the hills, on the high road from Lynton to Barnstaple, with a station about a quarter of a mile south from the village, on the new line between Barnstaple and Lynton, and is 5 miles south-west from Lynton, 11 north-east from Barnstaple and 12 east-south-east from Ilfracombe, in the North Western division of the county, Sherwell hundred, Braunton petty.
